Mont Rochelle Hotel, Franschhoek, South Africa

Mont Rochelle (formerly La Couronne) is one of the best hotels in the Winelands, combining a wonderfully exclusive location with superb views, elegant surroundings and easy access to some of the country's best restaurants and vineyards in Franschhoek.

Set on a hill overlooking the town, with commanding vistas of the valley and forested mountain slopes, the hotel has contemporary styling with a strong African influence in the design, and attention to detail throughout. There are 22 rooms, split between three different buildings, and plentiful lounges and areas to unwind and enjoy the views. The facilities are excellent with large pool, sauna, jacuzzi and treatment rooms as well as two good restaurants - the fine-dining Mange Tout, and the more informal vineyard restaurant, Country Kitchen. The colonial bar also serves light snacks.

The overall feeling at Mont Rochelle is one of secluded luxury, which never threatens to feel overbearing thanks to the friendly manner of the staff and the fine balance between elegance and informality.
