Katie

South Africa Specialist

As a child I used to daydream about exploring the world, seeing new places and meeting new people. As soon as I could, I started to travel abroad and I quickly decided my dream job would involve seeing new places so, I began a career in travel.

Later, I decided to take two years out to travel in Asia and Australia, where I lived for 18 months, but my mind kept returning to Africa. I’ve always spent my spare time watching National Geographic, and whenever I travel, my activities are always animal focused. On joining Audley, I was determined to work in the Africa team.

Visiting South Africa for the first time went way beyond my expectations and I promptly fell in love with the country. Its great diversity and the landscape, wildlife, food and wine, keep me wanting to come back for more.

Cape Town

I recommend visiting - Cape Town, South Africa

Camps Bay in Cape Town is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and the waterfront. The long stretch of powdery white sand is overlooked by the Twelve Apostles, which are part of Table Mountain, and the waterfront is lined with small restaurants and bars that make a good spot to watch the sun go down. It’s one of the best places I know to spend an evening and watch the sun set over the ocean while you linger over a cocktail or glass of wine.

Dulini Safari Lodge, The Sabi Sand Wildtuin

I recommend staying at - Dulini Safari Lodge, South Africa

Deluxe

Set overlooking a river bed where game regularly passes by, Dulini Safari Lodge in the Sabi Sands is one of those places I could go back to again and again. There are only six lodges, so the atmosphere is intimate. Staff are friendly and attentive and the guiding is some of best I have ever experienced. The lodges have a colonial feel with all the comforts you could imagine, yet you also feel at one with nature thanks to their clever design. The lodge is renowned for its leopard sightings and the game viewing in general is amazing. I just love it.

I'll never forget when…

My first safari trip ever was in Sabi Sands and I don’t think I’ll ever forget how it made me feel. The highlight came a few game drives into my stay when we came across a male lion relaxing on his own by a waterhole. Four white rhinos approached and to my surprise, the dominant rhino chased off the lion. He wandered off, found a spot, a comfortable distance away from the rhinos and began calling for his brother. I was so close, the sound pierced me and I could feel the vibration right in my bones. It completely took my breath away.
